Interview to Etien on Secura
[ See more interviews ]

TH: It is well known that there are respected characters inside the Tibian community, in which among them we can find the Senators, players who have contributed a lot in it; when they no longer are able to fulfill their duty as a Senior Tutor or Gamemaster they are conferred this honorific title.
The following interview was done to one Senator: Etien, member of the Rising Dragons of Amera and Mystic Mace on Luminera.
Greetings, Etien! We would like to know about the person who is behind the game. Can you tell us your name and age?

Etien on Secura: Greetings, my name is José (this is the first time I say my name in public) and I am 21 years old.

TH: It is a nice gesture from you to trust this to us, since it is the first time you do mention your name.
What are your hobbies, besides Tibia?

Etien on Secura: Besides the game I enjoy going out with my tibian friends to places like the beach, a pool, going to the movies and malls. Honestly I really like to do that, but sometimes it is very difficult for me to take my friends away from the computer! However, I must admit that sometimes I stay hours in front of it too, and that makes it hard for them to get me out of the virtual world.

TH: As you might have heard and said, "Today for you, tomorrow for me".
Let's go on. How did you find Tibia?

Etien on Secura: It all happened in a public place in Venezuela, called "Cyber café" (Public Internet place); I was working on one, and due to the fact that I did not use to play online games I had to learn to do so in order to help the clients who asked about them. I liked a really good one, but I retired when an update was implemented; I always saw my friends playing them, and to be honest I always used to say: "Why do you like that game? I hate the graphics". One week later I asked one of them to help me so I could create my account; since then I began playing Tibia.

TH: When did this happen?

Etien on Secura: Etien of Secura: At the beginning of 2005. I created my character but I didn't use to play much; I started to play intensely in 2006.

TH: What was the name of that first character? Do you have a story to tell us about your first days in Tibia?

Etien on Secura: I have had a lot of characters… one of them actually got a namelock on the first day! I was a very inexperienced player and a lot of bad things happened to me. Instead of creating new characters I created new accounts at that time; those characters were created on Hiberna, Secura, Grimera, Elera, Antica… and let's stop counting, please. As I said before, I used to create a lot of accounts, so many that I left some inactive and of course I lost them.
Right now I have four accounts, in which I managed to get to the rank of Senior Tutor in all of them. I must say that I was very active in most of the worlds, in the Help Channel, and the Support Forums by helping the people who asked questions and needed me to solve their doubts.
Now, you ask me about stories… I have plenty of them, but I will tell you the most important of them. One day I was hunting for the first time some necromancers with a good Tibia friend, one of those who told me about the game; suddenly we saw a Gamemaster; Borceforth. I got so happy to see him since it was the first time I saw one.
Another nice memory starts when I began to play in mainland, which I believed inspired me to continue playing Tibia; I liked in-game magic effects, especially when I used my first HMM rune.
Finally I want to take the chance to tell everyone my best in experience in the game, which is my recent incorporation into the world of Luminera. I found a very nice family: Mystic Mace, which I consider, I repeat, my best experience in the game.

TH: As all of use: test and error, but in your case we can say that you learned pretty well.
When and how was your arrival to Senator?

Etien on Secura: Well, there's not a traced path in order to become a Senator because that's a decision of CipSoft. In my case CM Iscen contacted me and asked me if I was eager to accept to take the position for that time. Mainly, Senators are retired Gamemasters, some of them Senior Gamemasters (Non existing position nowadays) as well as Councellors and some Senior Tutors.
I am not sure why I was made a Senator; it could be due to my active participation in the Support Boards and the Help Channel in game, answering questions to players and Tutors too. I think that's the main reason of being named Senator, position that makes me feel proud since I am the only one to be it in my country: Venezuela. Of course I took the position with the usual humbleness.

TH: Humbleness, a very important virtue of a great player.

Etien on Secura: Indeed. I strongly believe that a Tutor who is not humble can not be named Tutor, even if he/she has the orange color on the Help Channel.

TH: Besides humbleness. Which virtues or qualities must a Tutor possess?

Etien on Secura: A Tutor is a person who obeys the Tutor's Code of Conduct, one who helps without expecting anything in return for his/her help in the future; in other words, a Tutor a totally unconditional player, not one who believes himself to be better than anybody else just for having the orange color in the Help Channel nor one who reports half of the Tibian community in order to become a Gamemaster.

TH: Did you have any role model to follow?

Etien on Secura: Yes. One year ago I did not want to keep playing Tibia. My reason: I played in the old style way as many of the players, getting levels in order to get the three digit level (100), making a quest to get an items, etc. In other words, it all focused on pixels.
I felt like something was missing in order to keep playing and I didn't know what it was; it was by that time that I decided to erase a sorcerer which I played in Grimera. One day I was reading an interview in Tibiabr, which was made to Queen of Light II, a woman who plays this game not only to level up nor for the pixels, but for a community. Since that day my Role-playing change in a radical way; her words on that interview applied by Leen Leonhart were so wise that I managed to notice that she was my "missing link".
Some days after that, I created my character in Antica, deleted nowadays, and I met a beautiful person: my beloved Elizabeth Bennet, who was my mentor as a Tutor. I decided to look for a "home server", which happened to be Secura for only one reason: meeting my "Queen" and her thoughts. She opened her arms to me and I feel proud to live in Wolftower with her, receiving that light of knowledge and virtues from her.
I must admit that I was a submissing Tutor, I won't lie on that. One day I met Gogo on Secura, who gave me her trust and allowed me to meet Parodox, the best Tibia Tutor in my opinion and a great player. They were my first mentors.
Later on I met the wise Kosari, who is the master in what patience refers. In a near future I would like to meet the legendary Excessus, the mentor of my Queen.
I consider all of them my role models.

TH: What would you tell the players who have forgotten role-playing in order to inspire a change in them as it happened to you with Queen of Light II?

Etien on Secura: I would have to quote Sephiroth Snake's words: "You people only know to talk about levels and damage, Tibia is more than those things"
Obviously damage and level is important, but I have seen a lot of times that people break their friendships just because they have more power than others in the game; for example, a guy stealing his friend.

TH: Which has been that one act that has made you feel proud in Tibia?

Etien on Secura: I would have to say that helping those who don't know how to go to mainland when they are in Rookgaard and helping the new players who get trapped in caves because they have no rope.

TH: TibiaHispano. Is there an embarrassing situation that you would like to share?

Etien on Secura: Yes, it was that time when a player asked me if World Trading was illegal, which I answered in an affirmative way because I didn't read well the sentence.

TH: I can bet that the other tutors were amazed.

Etien on Secura: Yes, especially when another Tutor did not correct me right away and instead of that he answered "It is not illegal". I felt chills on my back and I said to myself: "Oops, what did I do?"

TH: Do you miss something about the 2005 Tibia you met at the beginning?

Etien on Secura: Absolutely nothing. Many people complain about the old PvP and the old sorcerer. For me CipSoft has implemented some radical changes in each update; we, as human beings, get used to something and don't want to leave it. Many people says: "Oh, this sucks, now we have do everything using hotkeys", when illegal Aimbots existed before that. CipSoft just implemented that into the Client in order to reduce the use of those illegal programs, which at the end they turn up to be hacking software.
There was a big number of bugs which have been fixed, like the abuse of excessive cheating with sharers, CipSoft created the Stamina and the Soul Points because the sorcerer was way too powerful, so much that Druids and Paladins were practically extinct, in my opinion. Sorcerers were an elite.
This next update will be used to improve the Druids a little bit. What will be improved? Hunting expenses. For obvious privacy issues I can not reveal the exact date of the Private test Server opening.
If I told you that I miss Tibia 7.5 I would be lying to you; it would be like saying that I like to use a boat instead of a yacht. If Tibia would have remained the same as before I can guarantee you that Account Sharing would be three times more than it is now… at least this is my opinion.

TH: Have you been interested in one mysterious item and in a way to know on how to get it?

Etien on Secura: Yes. In fact, I play because I love the game's stories… I love to explore! I have been doing so since one year before because solving mysteries is my hobby in Tibia; for example, looking for clues about the Sword of Fury (Spike Sword on Rook) or exploring the whole Desert Dungeon. When I get my levels I will explore some Ankrahmun areas, like the Savage Funkstar.
I am obsessed with Tibia's stories like genesis and Plains of Havoc. That keeps me really busy and I enjoy it.

TH: Last but not least, is there any message that you would like our readers to know?

Etien on Secura: Play for fun! It doesn't matter the way you do it but always respecting the rules. And please, do not drop the books you get in quests and do not abandon your real life!

TH: Thank you very much for this interview, Etien!
We wish you good luck in your duty as a Senator and in these mysterious quests you are investigating.

Etien on Secura: It is a pleasure. I hope TibiaHispano keeps working hard to entertain the Hispanic community which plays Tibia. Thank you for all!
